Rooftops along Ocean Avenue in Ocean Grove loom over sand berms constructed on the ocean side of the boardwalk before rough surf and high tides caused by Hurricane Florence and other storms assail the beach. At noon Thursday, Florence was off the Carolinas and expected to make landfall later in the day. Locally, the storm will create high swells and deadly rip currents and rough surf, the National Hurricane Center said.

Ralph Waits Out Florence

Ralph the Ocean Grove Fisherman waits out surf stirred up by Hurricane Florence Thursday morning. The storm, which reportedly has a diameter of around 500 miles, is expected to make landfall in North Carolina later today. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said life-threatening storm surge and catastrophic flash floods are "highly likely" along the coast of North Carolina and South Carolina. Locally, Florence will cause high swells and life-threatening surf and rip currents, the NHC said. Ralph's perch is on the remains of the Ocean Grove fishing pier, which was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy in October, 2012.

Two in lifeguard stand No. 2 were on the Ocean Grove beach in time for dawn but had a long wait for sunrise as Labor Day began with overcast skies and mist along the coast. The National Weather Service is calling for a high today of 85 and partial sunshine.
