Death of After-Hours Swimmer Prompts Warning

Officials in Neptune Township are warning beachgoers not to go swimming when lifeguards are absent. The warning comes after a Pennsylvania man was pronounced dead after being pulled from the surf off the McClintock Avenue beach in Ocean Grove shortly the night of July 9. In a statement on social media, the Area Network of Shore Water Emergency Responders (ANSWER), which was dispatched to the scene, urged people not to swim when lifeguards are not present, especially at night. "Take every precaution to avoid being swept into the water by obeying all regulations and not swimming out of sight of the lifeguards," the ANSWER Team said. The incident took place at 9:40 p.m. Officials said the victim was a 42-year-old male from Pittsburgh. Ocean conditions are expected to worsen through the week as Tropical Storm Chris passes offshore, creating riptides and rough surf, according to the ANSWER Team.
