1542: In England, the fifth wife of Henry VIII, Catherine Howard, is executed for adultery.
1692: In Glen Coe, Scotland, an estimated 80 members of the Macdonald clan are murdered for not pledging loyalty to William III, also known as William of Orange, of the monarchical duo of William and Mary, who ascended the throne by proclamation three years earlier in a peaceful political coup commonly known as the Glorious Revolution.
1983: In Turin, Italy, 64 people die in a fire at a movie theater.
2001: Four hundred people die in an earthquake in El Salvador.
