City Offers Program To Register Surveillance Cameras

Asbury Park residents and businesses with a sense of civic duty or a taste for crime-fighting may now register their private surveillance cameras with the city police department.

Registration is voluntary. "As officers respond to reports of criminal activity within the community, they may be able to use the information or footage captured on these surveillance cameras to assist in the apprehension and prosecution of the criminals involved," Deputy Police Chief David Kelso said in a statement.

According to the statement, information provided will not be shared. Owners of registered cameras will be contacted only if there is an incident within range of their camera system.

Also, law enforcement officers first need to request to see the footage before having access to the camera.

Private surveillance cameras can be registered on the city's website .
