1766: In Abbeville, France, Francois-Jean de la Barre is executed for not acknowledging a religious procession. He is reportedly tortured, beheaded, and burned on a pyre with a copy of Voltaire's Philosophical Dictionary nailed to him.
1863: In Pennsylvania, the three-day Battle of Gettysburg begins.
