'Leave the Weapon Props at Home,' Zombies are Urged

If you fancied yourself going to the Tenth Annual Asbury Park Zombie Walk this Saturday bearing theatrical arms and armor and other gear for slaying the pretend-undead and the living, hold your horses. Zombies might be among the height of make-believe, but organizers are banning anything that looks like a weapon.

"Leave the weapon props at home," the Asbury Park Zombie Walk posted on its Facebook page.

Organizers said the decision to ban the props was made in conjunction with the City of Asbury Park, the Asbury Park Boardwalk, the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce, and the Asbury Park police and fire departments.

Organizers in their statement asked participants to respect the decision. "Leave the weapon props at home. We want to continue the great relationship we've always had with our City by the Sea--and be welcomed back for an 11th Annual Zombie Walk next year."

The decision to prohibit the weapon props follows the mass shooting at a country-music festival in Las Vegas on Sunday, in which 58 people were killed outright and more than 500 were wounded. The incident is not mentioned in the Facebook post, but organizers noted, "the Zombie Walk is a free event that draws more than 10,000 people to Asbury Park every October, but it is a public event and also not the only thing happening on the Boardwalk or in the City this weekend."

More than 20,000 people were attending the Las Vegas event before a shooter police identified as Stephen Paddock, 68, opened fire on them from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel on the Las Vegas strip.

Zombie Walk organizers assured prospective attendees that weapons are probably overkill at this point, anyway. "The undead lose function of the brain when they're turned and wouldn't even know how to hold a weapon prop let alone wield one," they posted. "It's a Zombie Walk, for zombies. Ten years after the original outbreak in Asbury Park it should be safe to assume there aren't many 'survivors' left, you've infected them all!"
