700-Plus Take the Plunge for ALS Charity

More than 700 people braved the cold and took to the water off Manasquan Beach on Saturday to benefit a non-profit group that helps people with ALS.

The 11th Annual ALS Valentine Plunge raised more than $330,000 for the Joan Dancy & PALS (People with ALS) Foundation, organizers announced on the group's Facebook page.

Also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, after the Yankee baseball player who died in1941, ALS--amyotrophic lateral sclerosis--is a progressively debilitating disease of nerve cells in the brain and spinal column. There is no cure.

The Joan Dancy & PALS Foundation was founded by Terry Magovern in 2005 in honor of his fiancee, Joan Dancy, who succumbed to the disease. The foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for ALS patients and their families. It has support groups for patients, families, and caregivers at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.

Donations may be sent to the Joan Dancy and PALS Foundation at Riverview Medical Center, One Riverview Plaza., P.O. Box 8157, Red Bank, NJ 07701.
