Up to Nine Inches of Snow on the Way

A winter storm covering the northeast from Philadelphia to Bangor could drop up to nine inches of snow on the Jersey Shore, said the National Weather Service (NWS).

What began shortly after 4 this morning as heavy rain is expected to change over to a combination of sleet and snow around 9 a.m. Snow can be heavy at times and accompanied by thunder, the NWS said.

Snow could fall at a rate of two inches as hour between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. as the storm intensifies offshore.

The Neptune Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is urging people to stay indoors and off the roads.

"Due to the heavy rate of snowfall, many roads will be impassable or hazardous throughout the day," the OEM said in a statement.

Snow-parking regulations are in effect. In Ocean Grove, vehicles should be parked on the south or east sides of the street. In rest of Neptune, cars should be parked only on the even-numbered side of the street or as posted by the signs.

Cars not parked in compliance with the ordinance will be ticketed or towed, or both, said the OEM.

The OEM expects the snow to taper down at 2 p.m. The NWS has a winter storm warning in effect until 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, the wind this morning is north, 21 to 26 miles per hour, but will become northwest, 31 to 36 miles per hour this afternoon. Gusts could reach 50 miles per hour, said the NWS.

Temperatures are expected to reach of high of 33F during the day, with a low of 18F tonight.

Locally, schools have been cancelled and some businesses will be closed. Call to make sure you  head out.

All Neptune municipal offices are closed.
