The Historic Village at Allaire, Allaire State Park, and Monmouth Battlefield State Park are closed as part of the state shutdown, officials announced.
"All public events happening at these venues have been canceled," the State Park Service Division of Parks and Forestry said in a press release.
Camping reservations also are cancelled, officials said. Campers already onsite have until 11 this morning to leave.
Additionally, swimming is prohibited while the parks are closed. New Jersey State Park Police will patrol the grounds and enforce the closure, Parks and Forestry said in its statement.
Gov. Christie ordered all non-essential services and agencies closed as of today, July 1, after the state legislature failed to approve a budget by midnight last night.
The Historic Village's chapel is a popular wedding venue this time of year. Its closure in the state shutdown has left at least one wedding in jeopardy. Wrote one poster on the Historic Village's Facebook page: "What about wedding at the church for 7/2"
As of this posting, a representative of the living history museum had not replied. But the organization earlier had posted regrets in a statement on its Facebook page, saying, in part, "We will reopen the Village as soon as Allaire State Park allows us to do so. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We have no say in this decision, and we are not in control of the closing of the parks."
Before the shutdown, upcoming events at the Historic Village included the Independence Day Celebration on July 2, the Summer Flea Market on July 8, and James P. Allaire's Birthday and Guild Day, on July 15.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
