1532: Inca emperor Atahualpa is captured by Francisco Pizarro in what is now Peru.
1793: In Revolutionary France, 90 Roman Catholic priests who oppose the revolution are executed by drowning.
1849: Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky is sentenced to death for anti-government activities. The sentence will later be changed to hard labor.
