1859: American author Washington Irving dies.
1908: In Marianna, Pennsylvania, 154 workers die in a mine explosion.
1942: In Boston, Massachusetts, 492 people die in a fire at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub.
1968: English author Enid Blyton dies.
1972: Claude Buffet and Roger Bontemps are the last two people to be executed in France.
1979: More than 250 people die in the crash of an Air New Zealand sightseeing flight over Antarctica.
2016: More than 80 people, including members of Colombia's Chapecoense soccer team, die in the crash of a charter flight near Medellin, Colombia.
