1953: American playwright Eugene O'Neill dies.
1978: In San Francisco, city supervisor and gay activist Harvey Milk is assassinated by a former city worker who also kills mayor George Moscone.
1983: In Madrid, Spain, 181 people die in the crash of an Avianca airliner near Barajas Airport.
1989: All 107 aboard an Avianca airliner and three people on the round die when the plane explodes  in mid-air over Colombia.
2009: In Russia, 28 people die when a bomb explodes aboard the Nevsky Express between Moscow and St. Petersburg.
2015: Six people die in a mass shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
