1872: Susan B. Anthony isone of 15 women arrested for voting in the presidential election.
1947: In Christchurch, New Zealand, 41 people die in a fire at Ballentyne's Department Store.
1978: More than 900 members of Jim Jones's People's Temple cult die in a mass murder-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Victims include 270 children, Jones, and United States Congressman Leo Ryan.
1987: Thirty-one people die in a fire at the London Underground's King's Cross station.
1999: Twelve students die when a bonfire under construction at Texas A&M collapses.
