Application Process for Emergency Rental Help Starts July 6

The application process for New Jersey's COVID-19  Emergency Rental Assistance Program (CVERAP) opens July 6 at 9am. The program will provide temporary rental assistance to low- and moderate-income households that have lost income or employment because of the COVID-19 pandemic, said State Senator Vin Gopal.

Applicants may be eligible for up to six months of rental assistance that will be capped at the Department of Community Affair's fair market rent standard or the total of the rent, whichever is lower, Senator Gopal said.

Recipients will be selected through an online lottery, according to the information on Senator Gopal's website. Applicants do not have to be diagnosed with COVID-19 in order to apply.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age or a formally emancipated minor and meet CVERAP income and eligibility requirements. Only one pre-application per household will be accepted.

Applicants must also be New Jersey residents with a valid lease, signed by the landlord, for a New Jersey unit, and have a substantial reduction in income or have become unemployed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gross annual household income must be at or below maximum income limits for the county of residence.  Applicants are required to pay at least 30 percent of income toward rent.

Rent must be current as of March 2020. The program does not assist with arrears.

Applications will be available online from 9 am July 6 until 5pm July 10.

For more information, call 609-292-4080, option 1 or option 8 for assistance.

Completion of the COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance pre-application process does not guarantee placement in the program.
