FAUX RETRO: After the Storm

Gray light and a thick blanket of snow trick the eye into thinking this is an old black-and-white photo. The scene, on Main Street in Ocean Grove, was captured at dawn on March 22, in the wake of the area's fourth nor'easter in a month.

DAILY DAWN: March 22

Dawn in Ocean Grove on March 22 looked more like the second day of Christmas than the second day of spring after Winter Storm Toby dumped 9 inches of snow overnight.

SEEN: Left Behind

A block of snow loiters on Delaware Avenue north of Embury Avenue in Ocean Grove. Neptune Township's public works crews worked through the night to clear the streets and were still active when this picture was taken shortly before sunrise Thursday, March 22. The nor'easter --also called Winter Storm Toby--dumped between 6 and 9 inches of snow on the township's coastal historic district, most of it overnight as the storm intensified and dropped more than an inch-per-hour of snow. The township has been contacted for help in removing the snowy boulder, which might take care of matters on its own by  melting when the sun comes out and temperatures reach the 40s.

"Only you can prevent forest fires," Smokey Bear says. But what the national advertising icon doesn't tell you is that only the government can create them. Here smoke from a prescribed forest burn in Ocean County wafts toward Fletcher Lake in Ocean Grove on Sunday, March 18. The burn was part of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service's annual program to lower the risk of wildfires by burning undergrowth, branches, leaves and other natural fuels that accumulate on the forest floor, the service said in a statement. The burns, also known as "controlled burns," usually take place during the later winter months and will continue through the end of March.
