"Only you can prevent forest fires," Smokey Bear says. But what the national advertising icon doesn't tell you is that only the government can create them. Here smoke from a prescribed forest burn in Ocean County wafts toward Fletcher Lake in Ocean Grove on Sunday, March 18. The burn was part of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service's annual program to lower the risk of wildfires by burning undergrowth, branches, leaves and other natural fuels that accumulate on the forest floor, the service said in a statement. The burns, also known as "controlled burns," usually take place during the later winter months and will continue through the end of March. |
