Flu Activity 'High' in Monmouth County

Flu activity remained "high" in Monmouth County as of the week ending March 10, according to state health officials.

The trend reflects flu activity throughout the state, as seen in the Respiratory Virus Surveillance Report by the New Jersey State Department of Health.

The state was one of 26 in which the flu was widespread as of the week ending March 10,  while flu activity "declined significantly for the fourth consecutive week" in other states, Dr. Anne Shuchat, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said in a statement.

Flu season can last into May. Experts say there is still time to get a flu vaccination. Although this year's vaccine is reportedly about 30-percent effective in preventing flu, it could lessen the severity of symptoms, according to the CDC.

Once you get the "flu shot,"  it takes about two weeks for antibodies to develop, which is why health officials recommend getting the shot once the yearly version is available in the summer, before the start of flu season in the fall.
