Tour Historic Monmouth for Free

Have a hankering for history? Ever wonder what the Shore was like a century or two ago? You can get an eyeful at no cost on the first weekend in May, when dozens of historic sites and museums around Monmouth County will waiver entrance fees for the annual Weekend in Old Monmouth.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 7.

Lillian G. Burry, director of the county board of freeholders, called the weekend "a wonderful event for anyone interested in our rich history and unique architecture."

A total of 48 sites are participating in the event, which is coordinated by the Monmouth County Historical Commission.

Local sites include author Stephan Crane's  house in Asbury Park, which was built around 1878; the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, which was built in 1894; Historic Allaire Village, Wall Township, which in the 1830s was a thriving communal iron works; the Old Wall Historical Museum at the Allgor-Barkalow Homestead, on New Bedford Road, and St. Catharine's Roman Catholic Church, Spring Lake.

A detailed tour book and map will be available in mid-April on the county web site, wwws(dot)visitmonmouth(dot)com.

Also, each venue will have maps and booklets available on the days of the tour, the county said.
