Beach and Water Conditions Called 'Good' Despite Chlorophyll

Beach and water conditions appeared good despite elevated levels of chlorophyll along the coast, environmental officials said today following a routine surveillance flight.

A sensor detected the chlorophyll during the flight, which inspects the area from Raritan Bay south to Little Egg Inlet daily except Wednesdays, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) said on the website of its Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program.

The state Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring is analyzing ocean water samples to identify the species and concentration of phytoplankton that could be the source of the chlorophyll, the NJDEP said.

The department did not provide the chlorophyll reading. Nor did it say what constitutes acceptable or normal levels of chlorophyll in the water.
