Lawmakers Approve Bill to Legalize Non-Aerial Fireworks

With one stroke of the pen, Gov. Chris Christie could give older kids and adults more reason to enjoy the Fourth of July this year.

The state legislature today approved a bill (S. 3034) to allow the sale, possession, and use of specific non-exploding, non-aerial fireworks by persons age 16 and older. Now all it needs is the governor's signature.

The bill authorizes the sale, possession, and use of sparklers, snakes, and glow worms, smoke devices, and trick noisemakers, including party poppers and snappers, by people who are at least 16 years old.

Current law prohibits the sale and use of fireworks, and carries a punishment of up to 18 months in jail and fines of up to $10,000 for the sale of fireworks. Buyers can be sentenced to up to 30 days in jail and fines of up to $500.
