The Monmouth County Audubon Society will hold an evening summer bird walk on Sandy Hook on Thursday, June 22. The walk will start at 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the old visitor's center, north of parking lot E (about 1.8 miles from the park entrance).
Trip leader Linda Mack said evening is a "great time" to explore the quieter parts of Sandy Hook, and birders never know what they'll discover on the summer walks.
"Herons, shorebirds, ospreys and gulls are regulars - and we may be able to sneak a peek at piping plovers, endangered shorebirds that nest on Sandy Hook," said Mack, who is a past president of the society.
The walk is open to members and non-members, and is free of charge. No registration is necessary.
If you go, bring binoculars and a field guide, and dress for conditions. The walk will take place in dry or showery weather, but could be cancelled if storms are predicted, the society said.
