The surf was rough, and southerly winds gusted to 20 miles per hour,
sending sun hats and beach balls skittering across the sand. But once
the clammy morning fog gave way to brilliant sunshine and temperatures
in the low 80s, visitors flocked to Ocean Grove's beaches to play, if not to
swim. Starting this week, the beaches will be open full-time. The summer
schedule started under a yellow flag, which warns bathers about
dangerous conditions. Sunday was the second consecutive day that there
was a high risk of potentially deadly rip currents along the length of
the New Jersey coastline. The National Weather Service expected
conditions to continue through the evening.
