Manasquan Urges Keeping National Flood Insurance Program

Manasquan Borough Council expects to pass on Monday a resolution urging the borough's federal representatives to reauthorize and extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) when it ends in September.

The "Resolution To Urge Representatives from the State of New Jersey To Support the Legislative Action To Reauthorize and Extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)" calls the potential loss of the program "a catastrophic loss of insurance against flooding."

"The disruption of coverage and the potential financial burdens to residents throughout the state of New Jersey will be of great economic significance," the resolution says.

The resolution will be presented at the council's regular meeting this Monday, at 7 p.m. in borough hall, 201 East Main Street.

The Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, signed by President Obama in July, 2012, reauthorized the NFIP through Sept. 30 of this year.

According to the resolution, New Jersey is fourth in the nation in the number of NFIP policies enforced, and third in the total value of claims paid. The NFIP "provides access to affordable, federally backed flood insurance protection for property owners," the council says in the resolution.

The program also "promotes the public health, safety and general welfare, and minimizes public and private losses caused by flooding events."

Manasquan is part of the 4th Congressional District, which includes Avon-by-the-Sea, Belmar, Neptune Township, and Spring Lake, and is represented by Chris Smith, a Republican. In the Senate, New Jersey is represented by Cory Booker and Robert Menendez, who are Democrats.
